| Abstract/Contents: | Early work on soil heating for sports turf is reviewed and the results are given of field trials of deep and shallow beds of Lytag aggregate containing perforated plastic pipes supplying warm air to the overlying turf. Other beds consisted of normal soil, which either contained pipes inserted by mole plough and covered by Lytag granules to ensure even penetration of warm air, or was unheated (control). During the winter the best results were achieved with the shallow bed of Lytag. The deep Lytag bed was adequate but the turf thawed more slowly when frost or snow had to be removed by quick heating. The pipes in the mole-ploughed soil plot were inefficient in supplying even heat to the frozen turf, particularly when rapid thawing was required. |
