| Abstract/Contents: | "A concept is examined that increased comprehension of basic science principles, i. e., chemistry, physics, etc., by all levels of trufgrass [turfgrass] management personnel would stimulate the implementation of improved management practices. Within the experience of the author, such studies are deliberately avoided in in-service training as well as in many college curriculums purportedly as being too difficult and/or not relevant. An experimental syllabus designed to simplify basic chemistry as related to soils, water and mineral nutrients was presented in 3-hour workshop sessions to diverse groups of municipal and private industry employees throughout the greater Los Angeles area. Subsequent surveys were conducted to determine the extent of increased ability to solve common problems in fertilizer selection and use. Results indicate encouraging increases in interest and improved practices involving this knowledge, portending significant economy and upgraded turfgrass quality." |
