Abstract/Contents:"Field and greenhouse studies were conducted during 1989 to 1991 to evaluate the effectiveness of dithiopyr [S, S - dimethyl, 2 - (difluromethyl) - 4 - (2 - methylpropyl) - 6 - (trifluoromethyl) - 3, 5 - pyridinedicarbothioate] in large crabgrass [Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop.] control and to determine the response of the turfgrass to three consecutive annual applications of dithiopyr. Dithiopyr at 0, 0.3, 0.6, 0.8, 1.1, 1.7 and 2.2 kg ha-1 was applied preemergence to weeds on established `Baron' Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.). Stand density and root regrowth were determined by sampling plugs from each plot and growing the turf plugs in the greenhouse. After six weeks of growth in the greenhouse, plants were harvested to determine tiller and rhizome numbers, and root and shoot dry weights. Large crabgrass control was excellent with all treatments 12 or 14 weeks after treatment (WAT). Turfgrass was not injured by any of the dithiopyr treatments. Kentucky bluegrass was tolerant to dithiopyr up to 1.1 kg ha-1. Greenhouse studies showed that dithiopyr at 1.7 and 2.2 kg ha-1 reduced only root dry weights. Tiller density and rhizome development of turfgrass plugs sampled 6 WAT was not reduced following three years of consecutive annual applications of dithiopyr. Kentucky bluegrass from single annual application of dithiopyr up to 1.1 kg ha-1 for three consecutive years showed no adverse effects."
