| Abstract/Contents: | "Many golf greens throughout the world have been constructed with native soils. Often the aeration porosity is unsatisfactory. While short term maintenance treatments enable a satisfactory putting surface to be sustained, concentrated wear often leads to the slow deterioration of the grass sward. In a demonstration on an existing golf course, core drains 100 mm x 20 mm were installed vertically in trenches 35-mm wide at 3-m spacing down the slope. Slits, 18-mm wide and 150-mm deep, were spaced 250-mm apart and at right angles along the contour. Uniform medium-size silica sand was used for backfilling drains and slits and topdressing the green. With minimum disturbance, the putting surface was not impaired. Surplus surface water was quickly collected into the slits enabling the root zone material between slits to dry out more quickly and allowing play to recommence." |
