Abstract/Contents: | "The usefulness of impact penetrometers for assessing soil conditions on turf horse racing tracks has been limited because different racetracks register very different penetrometer readings for similar traction conditions. A standard performance scale has been derived by comparing penetrometer assessments with track performance over a range of soil types and turf surfaces. Penetrometers responses can be calibrated to this scale for individual racetrack turf surfaces based on soil strength and turf characteristics. Across a range of soil types, the break points separating subjective track classes was determined by relative bulk density and pore saturation. A method is suggested for using this information to derive a penetrometer scale for classifying the playability of winter sportsfields." |
