| Abstract/Contents: | "If root hairs are to be used in dynamic models of water flow or as a selection parameter for breeding, a root hair vital stain must be proven effective in field controlled conditions. This was accomplished by comparing root hair viabilities from Evan's blue stained main roots of Pensacola bahiagrass, (Paspalum notatum Flugg.), Tifway bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon [L.] Pers. x C. transvaalensis Davy), and Texas common St. Augustinegrass (Stenotaphrum secundatum [Walt.] Kuntze) which were collected from greenhouse and field-grown plants. Field grown main roots stained as easily as greenhouse-grown main roots. Main roots from field grown plants had fewer mean root caps than greenhouse grown plants. The distribution of root hair viability along the main root of greenhouse-grown plants was comparable to those of plants grown under field conditions. Root hairs were found on the entire length of the main root with the greatest density near the crown. Root hair viabilities on the main part of the adventitious root were no less than 74%." |
