Abstract/Contents:"Cool season grasses are widely used for sports turf in the Midwest, but there are few recommendations for traffic tolerant cultivars. Trials in the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program were subjected to artificial traffic with a Brinkman Traffic Simulator: 1980 Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.), 1985 Kentucky bluegrass, 1986 perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and 1987 tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.). The 30 passes of traffic per week resulted in severe injury, over 50% loss of turf cover, after six weeks of treatment. Ratings after a traffic period and a recovery period showed clear differences among cultivars within each species. Top performing Kentucky bluegrass cultivars were: 'Sydsport, Trenton, Wabash, Glade and A-34'. For perennial ryegrass 'Diplomat, SR4000, Gator, Ovation and Prelude' were among the most traffic tolerant entries. Kentucky bluegrass should be selected with greater care than perennial ryegrass or tall fescue because it has a wider cultivar response to severe traffic."
