Abstract/Contents:"Laboratory experiments were conducted to test the assumption that ethephon [2(chloroethyl) phosphonic acid] predisposes Kentucky bluegrass to ethylene sensitivity, and to determine the environmental conditions needed for ethephon-like growth regulation of Kentucky bluegrass by ethylene. Similar decrease in leaf and root growth and increases in tiller internode elongation were obtained with 280 (Mu)mol/m2sec irradiance, 1000 (Mu)L/L ehgylene for eight days, and shoots emersed for one minute into 16000 mg/L ethephon. There was no response to ethylene, at any level from 27 to 3200 (Mu)L/L when the treatment period was one day or irradiance was 34 (Mu)mol/m2sec. Ethephon effects were constant in all environments. Ethylene effects were additive when applied sequentially to ethephon-treated plants under high irradiance. Ethephon did not predispose Kentucky bluegrass to ethylene sensitivity. An eight-day exposure to ethylene in a continuous air-exchange system under high irradiance is recommended in obtaining a significant growth response in Kentucky bluegrass."
