| Abstract/Contents: | "The increasing interest in sports pitch surfaces made from organic materials such as bark and wood led to trials to determine the playing qualities and chemical characteristics of RICOTEN(R) and Intergreen Lignum sports surfaces. Both surfaces were laid on an appropiate base and given the equivalent of one year's artificial wear. It was evident that the playing qualities of the two organic surfaces were strongly affected by their packing density and water content. Their high elasticity was an advantage for player safety, but they are unsuitable for competition play. The RICOTEN(R) surface lacked shear strength (surface traction) and resistance to the effects of weathering and mechanical wear. The Intergreen Lignum surface, by contrast, showed problems with permeability in the course of continuing use. The reason is the high compactability of the organic material. Chemical tests showed no problem with heavy metal contamination but tests relevant to possible water pollution found that the drainage water samples from both surfaces had high levels of organic pollutants. In particular the results of tests on the drainage water from the Intergreen Lignum surface led to the conclusion that the material contained toxic ingredients which considerably affected the breakdown activities of micro-organisms." |
