Abstract/Contents:"A two year study was conducted at the University of Florida to evaluate the efficacy of several fall-applied preemergence herbicides for control of annual bluegrass (Poa annua) and lawn burweed (Soliva pterosperma) along with bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) green-up the following spring. Preemergence herbicide control is necessary to escape injury often sustained on non-dormant bermudagrass in Florida following postemergence herbicide applications during the winter. Excellent annual bluegrass (>89%) control was recorded for both studies at the conclusion (17 and 20 weeks after treatment (WAT) with dithiopyr G (1.12 kg ai/ha), oryzalin (3.36 kg ai/ha), pendimethalin (3.36 kg/ha), simazine (2.24 kg ai/ha) and both WP and G formulations of oxidiazon at (3.36 kg ai/ha). Good (80-89%) to excellent control resulted from benefin (3.36 kg ai/ha), dithiopyr EC (1.12 kg ai/ha), isoxaben (3.36 kg ai/ha), napropamide (3.36 kg ai/ha) and oryzalin + benefin (1.68 + 1.68 kg ai/ha) treatments. Bensulide (11.21 kg ai/ha) and trifluralin + ben fin (1.12 + 2.24 kg ai/ha) were the only treatments which resulted in a fair (60-79%) to good rating for annual bluegrass control. Poor (<60%) control resulted from the DCPA (3.36 kg ai/ha) treatment. Inconsistent annual bluegrass control resulted between years following treatments of fenarimol (2.29 kg ai/ha), fluometralin (3.36 kg ai/ha), prodiamine (1.12 kg ai/ha) and isoxaben + oryzalin (0.84 + 2.52 kg ai/ha). Lawn burweed control was excellent in both years with dithiopyr G(1.12 kg ha/ha), isoxaben (3.36 kg ai/ha) and simazine (2.24 kg ai/ha). Good control was accomplished with both the oxadiazon WP (3.36 kg ai/ha) and dithiopyr EC (1.12 kg ai/ha) treatments. Napropamide (3.36 kg ai/ha), oxadiazon G (3.36 kg ai/ha), pendimethalin (3.36 kg ai/ha) and oryzalin + benefin (1.68 + 1.68 kg ai/ha) resulted in good to fair control. Poor control resulted at the conclusion of both studies with benefin (3.36 kg ai/ha), DCPA (3.36 kg ai/ha), fluometralin (3.36 kg ai/ha) and a combination of benefin + trifluralin (1.12 + 2.24 kg/ha). Inconsistent lawn burweed control between years followed bensulide (11.21 kg ai/ha), fenarimol (2.29 kg ai/ha), oryzalin (2.52 kg ai/ha), prodiamine ("1.12 kg ai/ha) and isoxaben + oryzalin (0.84 + 2.52 kg ai/ha). Bermudagrass green-up significantly exceeded the untreated check plot at 29 WAT with simazine (2.24 kg ai/ha) in 1989. Bermudagrass green-up was not significantly affected when compared to the untreated check following all other treatments."
