Abstract/Contents:" Extensive field testing from 1985 through 1990 demonstrated that BAS 514 ..H (quinclorac) rates from 0.56 to 2.24 kg ai/ha provided effective control of numerous problem weeds in warm and cool season turfgrass cultivars by various methods of application. Important grass weeds controlled included: crabgrasses (Digitaria sanquinalis, D. ischaemum, D. ciliaris), foxtails (Setaria glauca, S. viridis, S. faberii), and broadleaf signalgrass (Brachiaria platyphylla). Broadleaf weed control included clovers (Trifolium repens, T. incarnatum, T. fragiferum, T. dubium), dandelion (Taraxacumm officinale), hairy vetch (Vicia villosa), horseweed (Conyza canadensis), pineappleweed (Matricaria matricarioides), and slender aster (Aster exilis). Good to excellent turfgrass safety was demonstrated among warm and cool turfgrass cultivars during the six year development period of BAS 514 .. H. Warm season species exhibiting acceptable tolerance were: Bermuda grasses (Cynodon dactylon) common, Tifway I and II, Tifgreen, Tifdwarf and Zoysia (Zoysia matrella) Meyer. Tolerant cool season turfgrasses were: Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis), tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea), and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne). St. Augustine (Stenotaphrum secundatum) and centipede, common (Eremochloa ophiuroides) were sensitive to BAS 514 .. H. Root and foliar uptake of BAS 514 .. H allow several methods of application: 1) preemergence, postemergence, or combination sequential applications to established turf, 2) postemergence to tolerant turfgrass seedlings less than three months old, and 3) preemergence, post-plant application to seeded bermuda and vegetative plantings of tolerant turf by sprigging, plugging and solid sodding. The EPA granted a 1990 EUP for expanded product evaluation of BAS 514 .. H (quinclorac) within warm and cool season turfgrass production and management regimes."
