| Abstract/Contents: | In a study of 8 grasses Festuca rubra and Poa pratensis produced most roots and Agrostis and Poa annua fewest (60-70% of those produced by the former 2 spp.). Varietal differences within a species were also noted. The weight of the roots produced depended on turf age, reaching a maximum at 2 years and decreasing thereafter. The amount of roots was also decreased by frequently cutting the sward, by high N applications, high soil moisture or irrigation, or by a heavy soil. However, root production was promoted by applications of the fertilizer Agrosil. |
