Abstract/Contents:Four traditional Austrian turf mixtures and Poa pratensis cv. Scott Windsor were compared under 5 different fertilizer/herbicide regimes. The grasses were sown in September and growth during the following 3 seasons was assessed. Scott Windsor grew more slowly than the mixtures. Frequent cutting reduced the proportion of weeds intolerant of cutting, especially on the P. pratensis plots, but a gradual increase in the amount of Trifolium repens could not be prevented and was particularly marked on the unfertilized plots. The monoculture was deeper green than the mixtures, especially where fertilized with Linz-Vollkorn, and for all 5 grass types the unfertilized plots were palest. Of the 2 herbicides tested Hedonal M forte (based on MCPA) was faster acting than Scotts weed killer, but the latter lasted longer. The germination capacity of most components in the seed mixtures was 95-98%, at which figure the amount of seed recommended for the mixtures (50 g/m2) was too high. The recommended rate for Scott Windsor (8 g/m2) was satisfactory.
