| Abstract/Contents: | Describes a procedure developed by DeVries (1949), known as the "25 cm2 specific frequency method" that was modified for the measurement of dense, fine-textured turf. Details the advantages of this method, known as the "plug-sampling method" which includes simple equipment, large sampling areas, easy repeated sampling, and the elimination of errors in indenification. Mentions that the method "is often most useful when supplemented by other methods of evaluation of turf..[and] should not be used indiscriminately." Recommends "the turf should be rated on an arbitrary scale by several observers independently and the scores averaged." Concludes that "this method, or some modification of it should prove to be useful in future research in turf culture." |
