Abstract/Contents:Three years ago Florida initiated a study of yard waste recycling alternatives in preparation for a statewide ban on yard waste from lined landfills. "Five methods of curbside collection were evaluated: 1) Cans manually loaded into packer trucks (nonautomated); 2) Noncontainerized waste mechanically loaded into open body boom trucks; 3) Paper bagged waste manually loaded into packers; 4) Plastic bagged waste manually loaded into packers; and 5) Waste manually removed from its container at curbside, and then loaded into packers." The assessment of the operations specifics include the following: 1) smooth scheduling, 2) public awareness campaign, 3) process selection, 4) facility start-up, 5) fee setting and revenue analysis, 6) product marketing, and 7) system impacts. The yard waste recycling program has resulted in a dramatic reduction of solid waste tonnage going to the city landfill and further increased Jacksonville's overall recycling rate.
