Abstract/Contents: | "With increasing pressure from activist groups and policy makers to reduce the potential negative environmental impacts from maintaining golf courses, superintendents face the need to fully embrace Best Management Practices (BMPs). In 2011, the Florida Golf Course Superintendents' Association (FGCSA) initiated the FGCSA Golf BMP Certification Program to further promote the environmental stewardship of its members. The program was developed based upon the existing Florida golf BMP manual - Best Management Practices for the Enhancement of Environmental Quality on Florida Golf Courses. The program includes educational seminars followed by a certification exam that demonstrates an individuals comprehension of BMPs for maintaining golf courses in Florida. To date, 419 individuals are certified in the program. Recognizing the importance of promoting BMPs among the golf course management industry, the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) collaborated with the University of Florida in 2016 to develop an online template for creating state-specific golf BMP manuals. The goal of this campaign was to have a BMP Manual created in every state by 2020. Additionally, the GCSAA and University of Florida created a second template that allows individual facilities to develop facility-specific BMP plans based upon the state BMP manual. While the FGCSA Certification Program promotes the comprehension of golf BMPs, a few questions remain to be answered. Are golf course superintendents implementing BMPs at the facility level and do educational programs have an impact on the implementation of BMPs at the facility level? A study was conducted to evaluate the FGCSA Golf BMP Certification Program and to determine possible barriers to adoption of BMPs at the facility level of Florida golf courses. The study examined the effectiveness of the certification program and its impact on golf course managers attitudes and actions concerning BMP adoption at their facilities." |
