| Abstract/Contents: | Four standard treatments and many experimental compounds were screened at 4 locations for the control of crabgrass (Digitaria sanduinalis and D. ischaemum). Excellent pre-em. control was provided by chlorthal at 10-15 lb, bensulide 15 lb, benfluralin 3 lb and terbucarb 15 lb/acre. CGA-10832 [N-cyclopropylmethyl-2,6-dinitro-N-propyl-4-trifluoro- methylaniline] at 1-4 lb/acre gave good to excellent control. AN-56477 [N,N-di-(2-chloroethyl)-4-methyl-2,6- dinitroaniline] at 4 lb/acre gave good control and bluegrass [Poa pratensis], redtop [Agrostis alba], bentgrass [Agrostis sp.] and bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon] showed tolerance. Oryzalin at 1-4 lb/acre, tested in 1 trial only, gave excellent control in a bermudagrass turf but severely injured bluegrass. In a trial for the early post-emergence control of crabgrass, mixtures of bensulide at 10 lb with NC-8438 [2-ethoxy-2,3-dihydro-3,3-dimethyl-5-benzofuranyl methylsulphonate] 0.5-1 lb, or with MSMA 4 lb or with nitrogen 4-8 lb/acre gave outstanding control without injury to a redtop/bentgrass turf. |
