Abstract/Contents: | "Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) is a highly polyploid, facultative apomict; which complicates Mendelian selection and breeding for improvement. It is also commonly found to have aneuploidy and/or aneusomy, which adds additional obstacles. In order to improve the selection and breeding efficiency of Kentucky bluegrass, a more robust method to track genes and traits is necessary. To this end, we are working to distinguish among gene homeologs, orthologs, and paralogs within Kentucky bluegrass. Without a close model organism or genomic reference sequence, this effort is challenging such that very little is known of the genome composition within the Kentucky bluegrass genome. We recently completed long-read genomic sequencing to overcome this weakness. As a result, we have been able to differentiate among gene families and highlighted possible genomic relationships. In this study we have sequenced three flowering time related genes from a poly-haploid Kentucky bluegrass plant and characterized their differences." |
