Abstract/Contents:"Eleven chemical and control treatments were evaluated on a 4-year-old sward of perennial ryegrass in Southern Ontario during Aug and Sep, 1994. The fungicides tested included: Daconil 2787, Tersan 1991, Daconil plus Tersan 1991, ASC-67098-Z, Fluazinam at two rates, Eagle and Fore. Treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design with 3 replications for each treatment plus an untreated check. Each treatment plot measured 1 m x 2 m. Fungicide treatments were first applied on 3 Aug, with a wheel-mounted compressed air boom sprayer at 140 kPa in water at 11 l/100 m₂ using Lurmark 03-F110 nozzles. Fungicides were re-applied on a 1-wk, 2-wk or 3-wk schedule according to the label over a 6-wk period. The last application was on 7 Sep. Red thread disease was evaluated every week, by estimating percent area affected or less in each 1 m x 2 m plot. Significant yellowing due to phytotoxicity was noted if present. analysis of variance was performed with PROC ANOVA in SAS†G. When a significant treatment effect was found, mean separation was done with the test of least significant difference (LSD). Ten percent area affected was considered an acceptable level of disease and was used as the criterion for efficacious control of red thread disease. Cultural maintenance conditions were as follows. Sulfur-coated urea (N-P-K: 25-4-10) was applied at a rate of 2 kg/100m₂ in Apr and Nov annually. The plots were irrigated as needed, and mowing height was set at 13 mm. Daconil 2787F at a rate of 250 ml/100 m ₂ was applied in late Nov annually. The underlying soil was a Fox sandy loam with a pH of 6.8. Moderate levels of natural infection were seen in late spring and persisted into summer. Prior to fungicide application, the disease incidence was uniform at a mean of 12.8% area affected, with no significant differences between treatment plots. In the analysis of variance, significant differences between treatments were found only on Sep 14, and the chemicals that showed statistically significant control of red thread disease compared to control were Fore (@ 400g/100m₂), the combination of Daconil (@ 90ml/100m₂) plus Tersan (@ 30g/100m₂), and Fluazinam (@ 16ml/100m₂). Calculation of AUDPC (area under the disease progress curve) supported the finding that Fore was the most efficacious treatment in this test. Disease pressure was seen to increase dramatically during the last two weeks of the trial. This increase in disease due to unseasonably cool and wet weather may have overwhelmed the suppressive potential of most of the treatments which showed much greater efficacy in previous years' tests."
