Abstract/Contents:"With the ever-increasing pressure from environmental advocacy groups and policy makers to reduce potential environmental impacts resulting from the maintenance of golf courses, the golf course management industry needs to fully embrace the adoption of best management practices (BMPs). In 2012, the Florida Golf Course Superintendents Association (FGCSA) initiated the FGCSA Golf BMP Certification Program to further educate its members and provide them with the necessary knowledge, skills, and tools to implement BMPs at their facilities. Currently, only 30% of active FGCSA members are certified in the program, well short of the original goal of having every FGCSA member certified within five years. With the imperative need to adopt BMPs and upcoming transfer of program operation to the University of Florida, an evaluation of the program was performed to identify barriers to the adoption of BMPs and provide future direction for the program. Research objectives included: 1) Determining reasons for the lack of participation in the program 2) Examining participant satisfaction regarding the effectiveness of program components and gathering feedback to enhance the program 3) Assessing the outcomes and impacts of the program. A study was conducted to evaluate these objectives by surveying members of the Florida golf course maintenance industry concerning the BMP program. The Targeting Outcomes of Program (TOP) model was utilized to evaluate program performance. The most identified barriers regarding the lack of program participation were the lack of seminar availability and communication. While several program components were identified as needing minor improvements, participant feedback was mostly positive. Program outcomes and impacts revealed a significant level of increased knowledge/skills due to participation and 95% of the participants indicated that all, most, or some of their BMP implementation was a result of their participation in the program."
