Abstract/Contents:"Fine fescues (Festuca spp.) are a group of very fine-leafed cool-season turfgrass species that are often used in mixtures with other cool-season grasses for home lawns, golf course roughs and areas requiring minimal maintenance. Fine fescues are not utilized to the same extent as other species in the USA partially due to poor wear tolerance and/or recuperative ability1. Improvement in the wear tolerance of fine fescues would enable greater use of these species. The response of turfgrass to wear can vary based on the season during which the wear is applied. Park et al. reported that wear caused less damage on Kentucky bluegrass during the spring than either the summer or autumn and greater differences among cultivars were observed during summer and autumn2. There is limited information on the wear tolerance of fine fescues and it is not clear whether the performance of fine fescues is dependent on the time of year that wear injury occurs. The objective of this study was to assess the difference in leaf bruising among ten fine fescue cultivars subjected to wear during spring, summer, or autumn."
