Abstract/Contents:"Dollar spot is caused by the fungus Sclerotinia homoeocarpa and is the most economically important disease of golf course turfgrass grown in temperate regions of North America1,2. Previous research has demonstrated that increasing rates of nitrogen fertilization may reduce dollar spot severity, however the results have been mixed and the impact of nitrogen as part of routine foliar applications to golf course putting greens remains unclear3,4. In addition, previous research has demonstrated that oxalic acid is important for S. homoeocarpa infection, and nitrogen fertilization may influence the production of this important compound5. The objectives of this research were to assess the impact of various nitrogen rates on dollar spot development using small, repeated applications of urea; evaluate dollar spot severity in response to different synthetic nitrogen sources that have acidic, neutral, or alkaline effects on soil pH; and evaluate oxalic acid production by S. homoeocarpa when grown in vitro at different pH levels."
