Abstract/Contents:"Robotic mowers have been in regular use on home lawns in Europe for decades. During robotic mower research, it was observed that turfgrass mown with robotic mowers resulted in greater quality and color than turfgrass mown with rotary mowers. The hypotheses of this study were 1.) tall fescue leaf cut index differs in response to mower type, and 2.) tall fescue leaf tip chlorosis index differs in response to mower type. Three, six-week experiments were conducted. At the beginning of each experiment, robotic mower blades were replaced with new blades and rotary mower blades were sharpened. Forty-eight leaf samples were randomly collected from tall fescue research plots mown with robotic mowers and forty-eight leaf samples were collected from research plots mown with rotary mowers. Turfgrass leaf collection occurred once each week for six consecutive weeks. Leaf cut index was (actual leaf cut)/(flawless leaf cut) and leaf tip chlorosis index was (area of chlorosis at leaf tip)/(flawless leaf cut). Leaf cut index and leaf tip chlorosis index were determined from digitized images of leaves. Rotary mowers resulted in a greater leaf cut index and leaf tip chlorosis index than robotic mowers at each data collection date. Rotary mower blades resulted in an increase in leaf cut index ranging from 0.17 to 2.45-fold, whereas leaf tip chlorosis index increased between 0.57 and 2.74-fold compared with robotic blades. It appears that robotic mowers result in greener turfgrass plots compared with rotary mower at least in part because the smaller cutting edge of the razor blade results in a reduced leaf cut index and leaf tip chlorosis index."
