Abstract/Contents: | Alaskan experiments with Bromus inermis cv. Southland, B. pumpellianus, B. pumpellianus X B. inermis cv. Polar, Poa pratensis cv. Nugget and Merion, and red fescue cv. Arctared and Illahee, adapted to low or high latitudes, showed that alteration of the diurnal light/dark cycle 8 weeks before freeze-up in mid-Oct. affected winterhardiness and seed production. Cultivars from mid-latitudes could be suitably conditioned to survive by these means, and those from high latitudes could be rendered less adaptable by changes simulating conditions in lower latitudes. |
