Abstract/Contents:"Control of goosegrass and smooth crabgrass in creeping bentgrass putting greens is difficult due to a lack of selective herbicides that safely offer control of these grasses. Based on preliminary studies, we theorize that early-GA-inhibiting PGRs will reduce the overall competitiveness of goosegrass and smooth crabgrass in creeping bentgrass putting greens. Our objective was to compare goosegrass and smooth crabgrass germination, plant height and plant biomass when treated with typical PGRs utilized in creeping bentgrass putting greens. In 2021, a greenhouse evaluation was conducted in Blacksburg, VA evaluating goosegrass and smooth crabgrass response to PGRs. This study was arranged as a RCBD with 18 treatments and six reps per run. Four PGRs were applied either PRE only or PRE plus POST. The PGRs evaluated were flurprimidol (0.28 g ai ha-1), paclobutrazol (0.28 g ai ha-1), trinexapac-ethyl (0.05 g ai ha-1), and prohexadione-calcium (0.14 g ai ha-1). Two weeks after the final POST treatment, plant heights, counts and dry biomass were recorded. All data were analyzed using PROC GLM and Fisher's Protected LSD (α<0.05) was utilized for means separation. At the conclusion of the trial, PRE plus POST applications of flurprimidol and paclobutrazol reduced the height of goosegrass and smooth crabgrass greater than all other treatments. Single and sequential applications of flurprimidol and paclobutrazol significantly reduced smooth crabgrass germination compared to the nontreated. Neither trinexapac-ethyl nor prohexadione-calcium reduced the germination of smooth crabgrass. Similar trends were observed in the biomass of goosegrass and smooth crabgrass. No PRE only treatment significantly decreased goosegrass or smooth crabgrass biomass. PRE plus POST applications of flurprimidol and paclobutrazol reduced goosegrass and smooth crabgrass biomass more than all other treatments. From this study we can conclude that early-GA-inhibiting PGRs reduce goosegrass and smooth crabgrass height and biomass to a greater extent than late-GA-inhibiting PGRs."
