Abstract/Contents: | "Replicate field experiments were conducted from 2019 to 2020 and 2020 to 2021 to evaluate late summer herbicide applications in combination with tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) seeding for false-green kyllinga (Kyllinga gracillima) control. The site was a mature stand of false-green kyllinga (>95% kyllinga cover in mid-summer). Treatments consisted of seven herbicide treatments and a non-treated control in a two-way complete factorial with tall fescue overseeding or no seeding. Herbicide treatments consisted of single applications of halosulfuron-methyl (70 g ha-1), imazosulfuron (420 g ha-1), and sulfentrazone + carfentrazone (280 + 30 g ha-1) applied 4 weeks before tall fescue seeding (4 WBS) and on the day of seeding. Glyphosate (220 g ae ha-1) applied on the day of seeding was also included. Turf type tall fescue was seeded at 360 kg PLS ha-1 in September. Plots were arranged in a strip-plot RCB design with three replications. False-green kyllinga control was evaluated visually on a 0 (no control) to 100 (complete control) percent scale in June, July, and August. A grid intersect count was conducted in July and August. Data were subjected to ANOVA in SAS (P = 0.05) with means separated using Fishers protected LSD test. Only the results of July grid count are presented. The combination of tall fescue seeding with imazosulfuron or halosulfuron applied 4 WBS was the most effective program in both years. Imazosulfuron 4 WBS combined with seeding resulted in ≤ 1% false-green kyllinga cover in both years. Similarly, halosulfuron 4 WBS resulted in ≤ 8% cover in both years. Seeding without herbicides resulted in 46 and 67% false-green kyllinga cover compared to 100 and 91% cover in year 1 and year 2, respectively. Tall fescue seeding improved herbicide efficacy of all herbicides in year 2 and all herbicides except imazosulfuron in year 1." |
