Abstract/Contents: | "Allelic variation for Phosphoglucose isomerase (PGI, E.C. 5.3.1.9.) plays a considerable role in research on ryegrasses. e.g. in variety discrimination. Standard gel electrophoresis at high pH (8.3) has revealed four common alleles at the Pgi-2 locus in perennial and Italian ryegrasses. Electrophoresis at low pH (7.0) separates one of these into two allelic variants that comigrate inseparably at pH 8.3. Unlike the 'x' and 'e' alleles that have also been found in perennial and Italian ryegrasses, the additional allele 'c*' is not rare. Therefore the enhanced detectability of allelic variants at the Pgi-2 locus at low pH, increases the possibilities for variety discrimination in Lolium spp." |
