Abstract/Contents:"The introduction of synthetic wickets has provided cricket administrators with the means to provide facilities in the numbers needed. Synthetic surfaces have allowed many more people to participate in cricket due to much lower maintenance costs. The game needs a true surface. The cost to prepare natural turf wickets is considerably higher and local bodies, under 'user pays', have been forced to make changes more in relation to cost. The increase in demand certainly could not be met with natural turf. Natural turf wickets on winter sportsfields create a problem. Increased weekend and midweek use cannot always be provided by natural turf. Longer use by winter codes in many instances has meant that natural turf wickets cannot not be used until late October or early November."
