Abstract/Contents: | Describes programs implemented by the Washington State Department of Transportation to reduce equipment and maintenance costs of managing turfed public road sides. Expenditures decreased to $50,000 in 1981 from $300,000 in 1971. Acreage mowed dropped from 20,000 to 1761 acres per year. Costs were cut by switching from reel to rotary mowers and experimenting with new growth regulators like Embark-25. Advanced employee training and organization of daily work activities has also helped reduce expenditures. |
