Abstract/Contents:Describes how wetting agents work to improve infiltration and percolation of water in soils. Hydrophobic (water repelling) and hydrophilic (water loving) soils, surface tension, and contact angles are discussed. Wetting agents can have: no affinity for the soil; the ability to dissolve into added water; or the ability to be irreversibly adsorbed by the soil. Turf managers prefer a wetting agent which is irreversibly adsorbed onto soil particles of all types at low concentrations. Wetting agents can reduce localized dry spots, puddling, and surface compaction as well as improve water availability to the roots.
