Abstract/Contents: | "Demand has increased for landscape weed control recommendations that do not include glyphosate. Glufosinate is non-selective but generally regarded to have lower efficacy on perennial grasses like bermudagrass. Clethodim is labeled for postemergence grass control in landscape plantings but requires multiple applications. Tank mixes of glufosinate and clethodim have been reported to be antagonistic, but the antagonism was overcome with higher doses. Glufosinate and clethodim efficacies on bermudagrass were evaluated, both individually and in combination. The experiment was conducted at the North Carolina State University Horticultural Field Laboratory in Raleigh. Two doses of each herbicide were included. The doses selected were the lowest and highest labeled doses for weed control in landscape settings. Nonionic surfactant was included in all treatments. Herbicides were applied with a CO2-pressurized sprayer using TeeJet 8008 flat fan nozzles and calibrated to deliver 50 GPA. A single application was made on August 10, 2021. The test area was an established low-maintenance lawn area dominated by common bermudagrass, Cynodon dactylon. Grass control was evaluated for two months after application, and percent green vegetation was estimated using the Canopeo app. Both doses of glufosinate visibly reduced green cover within 3 days and reduced green cover to less than 10% by 7 days. Regrowth following glufosinate applications was observed starting 13 days after application. Clethodim symptom development was slower, with over 80% green cover remaining at 7 days and about 50% green cover by 13 days. By 40 days after application, bermudagrass had fully recovered from all treatments. The addition of clethodim did not improve bermudagrass control with glufosinate. However, the addition of clethodim to the low dose of glufosinate did improve crabgrass control. No antagonism between glufosinate and clethodim was observed in this study. These results confirm prior observations that control of perennial grasses like bermudagrass without glyphosate likely will require multiple herbicide applications." |
