Abstract/Contents:"Persistence of preemergence herbicides often determine their viability for use. Methiozolin is a newly registered herbicide typically utilized for PRE and POST control of annual bluegrass (Poa annua). Methiozolin is also labelled for control of goosegrass (Eleusine indica) and smooth crabgrass (Digitaria ischaemum), but usage directions are unclear on the label and no peer-reviewed literature exists on the subject. Four field and two greenhouse studies were conducted in Blacksburg, Virginia in order to determine if methiozolin can effectively control goosegrass and smooth crabgrass in turfgrass systems. Two greenhouse studies were conducted in fall of 2021 to evaluate goosegrass and smooth crabgrass response to methiozolin rate based on weed stage of growth. Treatments were arranged as a six by five by two factorial with six levels of methiozolin rate (0, 125, 250, 500, 1000, and 2000 g ai ha-1), five levels of weed growth stage (three to four tillers, one to two tillers, three to four leaves, one to two leaves, and PRE) and two weed species (goosegrass and smooth crabgrass) for a total of 60 treatments. Weed seed planting was staggered in order for all treatments to be applied at once. Visual weed control and above-ground biomass was assessed 28 days after treatment (DAT). Four field studies were conducted between 2020 and 2022 at the Turfgrass Research Center in Blacksburg, VA to evaluate spring-applied methiozolin control of goosegrass and smooth crabgrass. Treatments were arranged as a randomized complete block design and included a nontreated check, methiozolin applied once (500 g ai ha-1), methiozolin applied twice at a 6 to 8 wk interval, bensulide (8967 g ai ha-1), oxadiazon plus bensulide (1681 plus 6725 g ai ha-1) applied twice at a 6 to 8 wk interval, and four biweekly applications of siduron (3363 g ai ha-1). Weed control was assessed via weed counts at the end of the summer (~September 10) for all trials. In the greenhouse study, methiozolin controlled smooth crabgrass and goosegrass 90% at 125 and 102 g ai ha-1, respectively, when applied PRE. Averaged across growth stage and rate, methiozolin controlled smooth crabgrass more effectively than goosegrass when applied POST. In the field, methiozolin applied once controlled smooth crabgrass 33%, which was less than all other treatments. Two applications of methiozolin controlled smooth crabgrass 64%, which was similar to oxadiazon plus bensulide, but less than all other herbicide treatments. Single applications of methiozolin controlled goosegrass 32%, which was similar to bensulide and siduron. A sequential application of methiozolin increased goosegrass control to 55%, and was less effective than oxadiazon plus bensulide. Results from this study indicate that although methiozolin is highly efficacious against smooth crabgrass and goosegrass at below-labelled rates, methiozolin degrades in the field too rapidly to be utilized as a preemergence herbicide applied at traditional timings. These results led to ongoing research evaluating frequent, biweekly applications of low methiozolin rates to control smooth crabgrass and goosegrass on golf greens and collars."
