Annotation from Turfgrass History and Literature: Lawns, Sports, and Golf, by James B Beard, Harriet J. Beard and James C Beard:"A small book on lawn planting and care. It is practically oriented to home lawn enthusiasts and conditions in North America." p. 607
Beard Section Heading:Post-1950 general lawn and landscape books: Post-1950 general lawn books
Quotable quotes"Right here we want to stress one point: "proper care" doesn't mean "pampering." Lawn care can be, and often is, carried to ludicrous extremes. Consider, for example, the man who each autumn cut up his turf in sods, stored it in a greenhouse, and then relaid it the next spring! "Oh well," you say, "eccentrics will do anything." But that's not quite fair, because you can find plenty of homeowners who are almost as bad. We're talking about those people who are forever sprinkling water, who always search for the tiniest blade of grass left by the mower, and who every so often retire to their "laboratories" to concoct some new fertilizer recipe. At least half of all this "Meddlesome midwifery" does for nought. In fact, a lot of it is actually harmful. This is especially true of much of the effort devoted to watering, ...." p. 50-51
"Water when necessary. To begin with, we want to repeat f much-stressed maxim of the experts: grass doesn't need daily, or even weekly or monthly, watering. People who stand out in their yards evening after evening fighting mosquitos with one hand while gripping a garden hose with the other profit the utilities company, not themselves. We're not saying that you shouldn't water at all. During periods of drought, you'll quite likely need to supply what Nature withholds. The thing to remember, though, is this: water the lawn only when it needs it and don't trifle with it; give it a good soaking or let it alone. p. 51
"You may have heard the witticism, "Nobody has anything to say but the scientists, and they can't say it." It's not true, of course, but it does point up a problem. Much writing about such subjects as lawn care is over the head of the ordinary homeowner." p. inside back cover
