Abstract/Contents:"Phosphorus (P) is a primary nutrient in plants and will be overexploited if current use patterns continue. Previous research has determined that increasing P levels improve annual bluegrass (Poa annua L. reptans) growth and development when evaluated in established monostands or mixed stands. However, research on the effects of P fertilization on species establishment competition with annual bluegrass is limited. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effects of varying P rates on the establishment competition of annual bluegrass and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). A greenhouse experiment took place in Corvallis, OR. The experimental design was a 2 by 2 by 5 factorial treatment structure arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replications and was repeated over two runs. The first run was initiated 5 March 2019 and the second run was initiated seven days later. Factors include perennial ryegrass cultivars (Black Cat II and Home Run LS), annual bluegrass (Two Putt) seeding date (seeded at the same time as the perennial ryegrass, or inter-seeded 45 days after perennial ryegrass was seeded), and phosphorus rate (0, 25, 50, 99, and 197 kg P ha-1). All plots were seeded with perennial ryegrass (488.24 kg ha-1) at run initiation; and annual bluegrass was seeded at a rate of 23 seeds per 15.24 cm diameter pot on their respective dates. All pots were allowed to grow for a total of 113 days before concluding the experimental runs. P rates greater than 0 kg ha-1 led to more annual bluegrass establishment when seeded at the same time as the perennial ryegrass. In contrast, when annual bluegrass was seeded into established stands of perennial ryegrass, annual bluegrass germination was highest in pots that did not receive fertilizer."
