Abstract/Contents:Differences between populations, within all three species studied, in total N content or in content of particular N fractions were not significant, being masked by large variations within populations. It is concluded that, within any population, selection among clones derived from it will be capable of isolating material with high or low contents of N of any chosen fraction. In field trials in 1970-7 at Cluj-Napoca, a local Banat cocksfoot cv. was sown in 1970 with lucerne in the ratios of 75:25, 50:50 and 25:75 and 0-240 kg N + 0-160 kg P2O5/ha was applied. With increase in N and P2O5 rates, percentage cocksfoot cover increased at the expense of lucerne and at the lower N and P2O5 rates weed cover increased. In field trials in 1970-7 a mixture composed of cocksfoot + tall oat grass + tall fescue + meadow fescue + lucerne + sainfoin was sown in 1970, and 60-80 kg N + 40 kg P2O5/ha was applied. At the lower N rate cocksfoot, lucerne and tall fescue were the main components and at the higher N rate lucerne and cocksfoot after 7 yr. In further trials cocksfoot was grown in 50:50 mixtures with white clover or lucerne or in a mixture with meadow fescue + perennial ryegrass + Kentucky bluegrass + birdsfoot trefoil + white clover and given varying amounts of N each yr + 40 kg P2O5/ha. When 0 or 60 kg N/ha were given in yr 5-7, weed infestation was greater at the lower N rate, and white clover was quickly lost from the mixture.
