Abstract/Contents:"Reestablishing golf course putting greens following a winterkill event is challenging due to the prevalence of sub-optimal temperatures during the spring in northern climates. The objective of the study was to evaluate spring establishment rate of creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.), annual bluegrass (Poa annua var. reptans (Hauskn.)), and a 50/50 by weight mixture of creeping bentgrass and annual bluegrass. Plots were seeded three consecutive weeks on a putting green that had the sod removed using a sod cutter. The experiment was conducted in spring 2023 at three locations: East Lansing, MI, Ames, IA and Madison, WI. Four creeping bentgrass cultivars ('Penncross', 'Pure Distinction', 'Declaration', 'Penn A-4'), one annual bluegrass ('Two-Putt'), and a mixture of Pure Distinction and Two-Putt were seeded at 9.7 g m-2. An unseeded control treatment was also included. Seed was applied by hand using a shaker bottle. Seeding occurred during three consecutive weeks; the first seeding date corresponded to when soil temperature at a 5 cm depth was 7°C at each location. After seeding each date, plots were lightly raked to provide adequate soil to seed contact and starter fertilizer was applied at 4.9 g P m-2. Irrigation was applied when necessary. Plots were fertilized with 1.0 g N m-2 every 2 weeks after first emergence. The experimental design was a split-plot design with whole plot in randomized complete block design with four replications. Digital images were collected weekly using a light box to assess percent turfgrass cover. Statistical analysis was conducted separately by location. Wisconsin had higher percent cover at the early seeding date during the first two weeks of measurement compared to the middle and late dates. The Wisconsin and Michigan locations showed differences in cultivar, with Penncross, Penn A-4, and Pure Distinction having the highest and Declaration having the lowest percent turfgrass cover."
