Abstract/Contents: | Rooting characteristics such as elongation to lower soil depths and root branching have been considered important in drought avoidance. A technique using flexible plastic tubes to monitor root elongation, branching, and density is being used to screen germplasm for favorable rooting characteristics. Root systems of the entries were assessed for maximum and third maximum root length, root number, and weight at 10 cm increments, root extension rate, and total leaf dry weight. When all root growth parameters are considered, the superior grasses were AZ-143, NTDG-1, NTDG-4, and NTDG-5. |
