Abstract/Contents:Twenty-one vegetatively propagated and seven seeded entries were included in the study. All plant materials were increased in the glasshouse until sufficient quantities to plant in the field were obtained. During the turf establishment phase, irrigation was applied frequently enough to promote vigorous lateral stem growth. After the turfed plots were fully established, they were mowed twice weekly at 1 inch (2.5 cm), with clippings removed. Preemergent herbicides were not used. Insecticides, fungicides, and post emergent herbicides were used only to prevent a serious loss of stand. FB-119 (FLoraTeX), RS-1, Texturf 10, E-29, and Vamont exhibited the most rapid establishment rates, while NMS 14, NMS 3 (Sonesta), Tifgreen, Arizona Common, NMS 2, and NMS 1 (NuMex Sahara) were the slowest entries to establish. In the visual quality assessment, A-29, E-29, NM507, and NM471 were consistently rated highest, while NMS 14, NMS 2, MSB-30, and Arizona Common were rated lowest for the years 1988-1990. The data presented are from the first 3 years of rating the study. Final conclusions concerning the adaptation and performance of the 28 turfgrasses cannot yet be made because a minimum of 6 years is needed to effectively evaluate a turfgrass species.
