| Abstract/Contents: | White grubs (the root feeding larvae of scarab beetles) are the most destructive turf insects in the Southwest. Among the most promisisng means of control presently under widespread scrutiny is the use of certain species of nematodes in the genera Steinernema and Heterorhabditis for biological control of white grubs. Nematode treatments were prepared from commercially produced (Biosis, Palo Alto, CA) infective juveniles prepared according to company instruction. A chemical insecticide treatment was included in the experiment for comparison. Diazinon and S. glaseri reduced white grub populations by 60 percent and 57 percent, respectively, in comparison to the untreated control. S. carpocapse and S. feltiae caused no detectable mortality in the insects. We would like to pursue further investigations to confirm the present encouraging results with S. glaseri. |
