Abstract/Contents:The present study was undertaken to determine the efficiency of selected mulching mowers to finely shred Common bermudagrass clippings. The lowest percentage of large clippings was obtained for the Lawnboy WB 21in., 5 HP; John Deere WB 21 in., 4.5 HP; John Deere Rider 38 in., 12.5 HP (two blade); and Bolens WB 21 in., 4.5 HP machines. The differences in shredding efficiency for the mowers reflect differences in the number of times grass blades are impacted by the mower blade. These differences could be due to the aerodynamic properties of the blade or the design of the mower deck and its probable influence on air flow patterns during the mowing operation.
