| Abstract/Contents: | "The purpose of this project was to study the effects of subsoil compaction, layering of topsoil and two ameliorating actions on nutrient and pesticide losses from turf. The results of this study have demonstrated that when one-half or more of runoff from turf happens when soil is frozen and the physical composition of the soil below the zone of subsoil compaction is highly variable, subsoil compaction and a distinct interface between topsoil and subsoil do not significantly influence the amount of runoff that occurs. The initial results of this study suggest that soil disturbances such as those that occur in urban settings do increase runoff from turf, but not nearly as much as one might expect. In the absence of surface compaction because of traffic, physical composition of the soil beneath compacted zones has as great or a greater impact on runoff from turf than does subsoil compaction or layering of topsoil over subsoil. Another mitigating factor is that a significant portion of the runoff is from frozen soil, in which case soil disturbance has no effect on the amount of runoff." |
