Abstract/Contents:"A field study was initiated in May of 1993 to evaluate the efficacy of Arsenal (imazapyr), Pursuit (imazethapyr), and Cadre combinations for perennial johnsongrass control and bermudagrass tolerance on Oklahoma roadsides. Selected combinations were evaluated using Arsenal at 0.063. 0.09 and 0.125 lb. a.i./A, Pursuit at 0.047 and 0.063 lb. a.i./A, Cadre at 0.125 lb. a.i./A, Roundup (glyphosate) at 0.25 and 0.375 lb. a.i./A. Roundup and Oust (sulfometuron), at 0.75 and 0.094 lb. a.i./A, respectively, was included as a standard treatment. All treatments included X-77 surfactant at a rate of 0.25% V/V. Treatments were applied to actively growing johnsongrass on 25 May (12-18 inches in height) and 11 June (24-36 inches in height) 1993. Treatments were applied using a CO2-powered hand-held boom calibrated to deliver 20 gallons of water per acre. The treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block with three replications. Visual evaluations were made 50 and 100 days-after-treatment (DAT) for percent johnsongrass control and percent bermudagrass injury as compared to the untreated check. As all treatments applied on 11 June to the more mature johnsongrass (boot) provided poor johnsongrass control, the following results are from the earlier application date of 25 May. All treatments of Arsenal combined with Pursuit did not provide an acceptable level of johnsongrass control at 50 or 100 DAT. An acceptable level of johnsongrass control would be approximately 90% for at least 8 to 10 weeks. Johnsongrass control from Arsenal plus Pursuit treatments ranged from 56 to 73% (50 DAT) and 30 to 56% (100 DAT). Cadre, alone, produced good to moderate johnsongrass control at 50 DAT (80%) and 100 DAT (75%). Treatments of Cadre and Arsenal produced good johnsongrass control at 50 DAT (86%) and ranged from 75 to 80% at 100 DAT. Cadre and Pursuit produced good johnsongrass control at 50 DAT (87%) and 100 DAT (82%). Treatments of Cadre and Roundup also produced good to excellent johnsongrass control which ranged from 85 to 92% (50 DAT) and 83 to 92% (100 DAT). Roundup and Oust, the standard treatment for bermudagrass release in Oklahoma, provided 97% (50 DAT) and 93% (100 DAT) johnsongrass control. Arsenal and Roundup produced good to moderate control of johnsongrass at 50 DAT (83%) and 100 DAT (77%). Injury or discoloration of bermudagrass in the range of 40 to 45% that did not persist for more than 4 to 6 weeks would be considered acceptable for roadsides in Oklahoma. Bermudagrass injury observed from the Roundup plus Oust treatment was 30% (50 DAT) and 18% (100 DAT). All treatment combinations which contained Arsenal at 0.125 lb a.i./A prduced an unacceptable level of bermudagrass injury. Injury from these treatments ranged from 52 to 70% (50 DAT). All other treatments produced moderate to low levels of temporary bermudagrass injury, which was deemed acceptable."
