| Abstract/Contents: | Outlines the positive results attainable from proper sanding of turf surfaces, such as a greater health of the grasses, more uniform ball rolling speed without needing to shorten the mowing height, and a reduction of soil compaction. The size of the sand particles has a profound influence upon the ultimate quality and health of the turf. The most common errors occur when sand that is too coarse is applied (ideal quartz sand particle size should be 0-2mm), or, when sand with a high percentage of small particles is deposited, that the surface is watered too soon, resulting in clumping and in irregular application. A further mistake is made by sanding too infrequently and too late after the roots of the turf have been established. Four kinds of sand mixtures are evaluated in terms of their particle size and water permeability. Lack of fine particles increases water permeability to an extent that is unhealthy for the turf grasses; it breaks up the capillary action, and necessitates a need for increases irrigation. |
