| Abstract/Contents: | Soil compaction, either static or dynamic, greatly reduces the wear resistacne of turf through a variety of both physical and chemical changes. The reduced pore size and decreased water infiltration coupled with increased temperature reduces the exchange of gases in the roots, which in turn lowers the soil pH level. With soil conditions no longer favorable, the turf grasses become less wear resistant (Belastbar). Specific values for various soil characteristics required for optimal growth, and for creating the highest level of wear resistance are given, along with suggested maintenance measures that can be taken to reduce the compaction of the soil, such as aerification, sanding, and the loosening of the vegetative layer. |
