Abstract/Contents:"Ground cover, species composition and thatch depth were measured on 148 golf greens, representative of a wide range of British golf courses. Poa annua L. was by far the dominant grass species. Agrostis spp. was the most commonly occurring desirable grass species while Festuca spp. were only recorded on 47% of greens. Where moderate amounts of Festuca were recorded in the sward this was generally restricted to certain environmental conditions (e.g. links courses) and newly established greens. Thatch depths were greatest on meadowland and upland courses and least on heathland greens. In general thatch depths were greater on more moisture retentive soils. Strategies for P. annua and thatch control are discussed in the light of these results."
