Abstract/Contents: | "The results are presented of a study on the pH, extractable phosphate and extractable potassium levels of rootzone samples taken from golf greens (10,840 samples) and bowling greens (543 samples) received at STRI from 1986 to 1993. The results showed that for soils from golf greens the majority of pH values were in the acidic range. Those from bowling greens showed a wider range of pH value than those from golf greens. Extractable phosphate values for most of the samples tested were at adequate levels for fine turf. However, a significant proportion (22%) of golf green rootzone samples did have concentrations of phosphate low enough to produce deficiency in fine turf. The equivalent category in bowling green soils comprised 2% of the total number of samples analysed. The distributions of potassium concentrations for golf greens and bowling greens were similar. The majority of samples tested had potassium concentrations at an adequate concentration for fine turf. However, approximately 20% of the samples tested had potassium concentrations at a level where potassium application would be recommmended for fine turf. The results were compared with those obtained in a similar survey carried out for samples received between 1978 and 1981." |
