Abstract/Contents: | "Seed priming is the method of controlling seed moisture imbibition that allows seed to accomplish pre-germination activities prior to planting. Priming can add 5 to 25% premium over raw seed (depending on crop), but it can increase value by decreasing the overall use of seed, achieving a stand or by improving the speed and accuracy of seeders when combined with coatings." Discusses mechanisms of priming in increasing uniformity of germination, three basic methods of priming seed: osmotic, solid matrix and drum, potential benefits of primed seed for the grower, and the increasing demand for primed seed. |
