| Abstract/Contents: | "In 1988, we initiated a fertilization program on 'Meyer' and Z-102 zoysiagrass... Observations are made as needed for fall and spring color, winter injury, summer quality, and weed infestatations. Density of 'Meyer' zoysiagrass receiving October and November nitrogen applications was significantly better than that of turf given N in June or June-Spetember. The JS(2x)ON treatment improved mid-summer density in Z-102 compared with the June application. Density of both 'Meyer' and Z-102 turfs fertilized with 1 lb N in June only was considered ample for good quality turf until late 1990, when a decline in density became apparent. Summer and fall color of zoysiagrass improved in response to fall fertilization treatments compared with color of June-fertilized turf. However, the color advantage of fertilization later than September was diminished by increasing populations of winter annual weeds in fall-fertilized plots. Also, winter injury (1989-90) in the marginally adpted Z-102 was more severe with three of four fall N treatments compared with the June only treatment. Fall fertilization improved spring greenup in 'Meyer' zoysiagrass only in 1990 and any small benefit in spring or fall color appeared to be mitigated by increasing weed populations." |
