| Abstract/Contents: | Outlining the most common causes of surface compaction on a golf green, such as faulty construction (poorly designed drainage systems, use of improperly sized sand particles etc.) and incorrect maintenance methods (heavy equipment, vibration caused by equipment, too few sprinklers necessitating too wide of sprinkling radiuses with too large of drops etc.), the effects that such compaction have upon the actual surface, the grasses as well as upon the playability of the green are discussed. The effects of the use of a TORO Aerator and a HydroJect 3000 were compared to acertain which proves more beneficial to turfgrasses. When tested on a five year old Penncross golf green, the Hydroject 3000 demonstrated equal or better results than the TORO Aerator, particularly in the 76-152 mm depth of soil, where the aerator has little noticeable effect. The turfgrasses regenerate faster with a HydroJect treatment, although the aerator reduces thatch and root mass faster than the HydroJect 3000. When tested on a six year old Poa Pratensis turf surface, the results and differences were less pronounced. |
