Abstract/Contents:"Turf carrying layers exi[s]ted even before the introduction of [t]he DIN standard. Different systems existed where more or less sand had been added to the top soil to make it meager. But even after the DIN standard had been introduced in October 1974 this standard was applied only reluctantly, and many turf sports grounds were set up with simplified carrying layers , i.e., the soil was mixed with sand only, without taking heed of the DIN standard. In the region of Munich especially the turf carrying layer is even today not composed in line with the criteria of the DIN standard, but preference is given over simplified carrying layers of not very meager soil. This system functions, however, only when optimal soil and sub-soil conditions exist conbined with high permeability. There is hardly any doubt that of the turf sports grounds established in the past 10 years not more than 10 per cent would pass a thorough examination when the DIN standard would be applied. Experience has shown that badly set up turf carrying layers will over and over again cause great problems. To ensure success, only tested and approved turf carrying layers should be used in future. When establishing them care should be taken that no mistakes occur in mixing. Moreover, when the soil is mixed and when the layer is laid, it should be dry."
